Jeff Green, the #66 Best Buy Chevrolet Monte Carlo pilot for Haas CNC Racing, has drove at Pocono Raceway this past weekend. Green struggled to get the 21st position before an electrical trouble dropped him to a 32nd-place finish when the race was called due to rainfall.
At the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend, the No. 66 sport a special paint design to support the kickoff of a Best Buy fundraising campaign for Fisher House, a foundation that establishes 'comfort homes' to offer lodging for families of hospitalized military members. The car could not flaunt a striking Chevrolet pickup bra, but it could exhibit something more powerful.
What is more, Best Buy is also supporting Fisher House through hands-on volunteer opportunities for Best Buy employees at Fisher House locations, and other activities. "We're putting the Fisher House logo on the car to remind everyone to make a donation. One of the best ways to support the troops is by helping their loved ones, and that's exactly what Fisher House does," said Green.
Green added, "Someone explained it to me like this: Let's say there's a military member from California, but he's stationed in Virginia and has to be hospitalized. For his family in California to be able to come see him, it costs a lot of money. Without Fisher House, a lot of families wouldn't be able to afford to make the trip."
The #66 Best Buy Chevrolet Monte Carlo pilot has this to say about Michigan: "I like the place. I'm not sure why we haven't done as well here. We ran pretty well here when I drove for (Richard) Childress. I guess we've just never been able to get the right package at the right time."
Green talks about some frustrating finishes: "Well, it would be different if our cars weren't good. We've had some pretty decent race cars these past three or four races, but mistakes have taken us out of contention." He added, "At Dover and at Pocono, problems on pit road cost us. At Dover, it was my fault, but this past weekend, we just had a couple of bad pit stops. It's frustrating, but the guys are trying, so it's hard to come down too hard on them. You just have to know that there's a fresh chance every race to perform better, and that's what motivates you."
What does the team anticipate in the Michigan race? "I like all the speedways. The surface of Michigan is porous, so it treats the tire kind of like Darlington (Raceway) does," said Crew Chief Harold Holly.
The team is dropping significant points and Holly noted: "You have to accept the reality of the situation. We had a fast car at Charlotte and were coming up through the field, but we got caught up in an accident. At Dover, once we got our tire issue and our pit road issue out of the way, our lap times would have put us in the top-15. At Pocono, we didn't unload like we needed to, but that was my first trip to Pocono in a couple of years, so I had some catching up to do in terms of relearning the track."
He added, "It's been mistakes that have cost us, so I just emphasize the importance of trying to eliminate mistakes. It's not like we haven't had some fast cars, but mistakes are just killing us. The pit crew guys have been focusing on the fundamentals and drilling on those. Our pit stops are an issue, but it's one we're working hard to straighten out."

Williams, Toyota, Red Bull Give Reaction On Formula 1 Race
Author: Kaye Leery
Source: articledashboard.com
Williams, Toyota and Red Bull teams gave their comments on the Formula 1 race.
In general, Nico Rosberg viewed this weekend positive but not the best race today. Slightly quicker Button was obviously having a better day with his car and his tires, so he finished ahead of Rosberg and took the point. Rosberg said that it is a shame for everyone who has put in so much effort to leave with no reward. However, he said that this does not affect their position in the constructors' championship, but they need to start scoring consistently, particularly because they are now halfway through the season.
Alex Wurz obviously is not satisfied in his 14th spot. But both cars made it to the finish without any issues which proves their good reliability. He said his only problem was when he was in traffic that he was stuck in the train behind Coulthard and neither their strategy nor pace allowed them to get past Coulthard. Wurz found overtaking uneasy because he needed more maneuver. He anticipates a better luck in the new game next weekend at Silverstone because it is their team's home race.
Racers of Toyota, Toyota fuel savers maker, had different views.
Ralf Schumacher perceived it quite well aside from the first lap. He feels ashamed that they did not score points because their pace was competitive. He was unlucky when Jarno hit Kovalainen at the hairpin on the first lap. He could not go anywhere and lost a couple of positions as everyone tried to get through the corner safely. He admits he was a lot quicker than Barrichello but he could not overtake. From there on, he had difficulty on the race and lost 20 seconds before his first pit stop. He said that the car showed its potential for they kept fighting and put some good lap times in. He added that they are continuously developing the car and he was definite that they will make more progress to enhance the car.
Jarno Trulli viewed the chase as a racing accident because the field was very crowded on the first lap and he admitted that he just misjudged it going into the hairpin. He explains he was not attacking anyone but he just broke too late and hit Kovalainen, to whom he was very sorry. He admits his mistake that the impact damaged his suspension and front wing. He got back to the pits but there was no way for them to pursue.
Red Bull driver Mark Webber had a pretty good start and was fighting with Rubens (Barrichello) through Turns two and three. He got to turn five and had to go between the cars of Ralf (Schumacher) and Rubens and almost lost his car's front wing but they got through it. In the first stint, he was held up by Ralf, who in turn had Barrichello in front of him. Webber explained that on the first lap of his second stint, he had to deal with Ralf while on new tires, so it was a baffling race. He continues that they tried to go shorter in the second stint to jump Rubens. Unfortunately, it but did not work out.
Teammate David Coulthard said that the race was going quite well at the beginning. He added that he was not sure if his laps or the pit stops were not quick enough, but with both stops he did not gain any advantage. He explains that they turned the engine down towards the end of the race because they were not racing for points in the last few laps.
All these drivers are looking forward to a better race next weekend at Silverstone.

The New Face of Chrome Plating
Author: Jay Berentis
Source: articleage.com
New technology taking the place of chrome plating with the
ability to chrome plate metal as well as non-metal surfaces
(plastic, fiberglass, wood, virtually any surface). Without the
pitfalls of conventional chrome plating and its environmental
hazards. Used in a wide range of industries chrome plating has
become increasingly difficult in recent years. Regulations
designed to protect against the safety and environmental hazards
of hexavalent chrome have increased the cost of chrome plating
and burdened facilities performing plating services.
Conventional chrome plating has several limitations and cannot
be used to chrome plate many surfaces. While industry downsizing
and consolidation has led to the closure or offshore relocation
of as many as half of the chrome plating shops in North America
due to EPA regulations. Europe is ambivalent and Asia is largely
unconcerned with regulating chrome plating pushing much of North
America chrome plating over seas. The need has arisen for an
alternative to chrome plating that does not have the
environmental and safety issues of conventional chrome plating.
Chemical metalizing uses a chemical process instead of an
electrical process to attach metal to a substrate. One advantage
is nonmetal as well as metal can be chrome plated (plastic,
fiberglass, wood, virtually any surface). There is also more
flexibility in the parts making for fewer failures due to flex.
The added flexibility is due to the thinness of the coating.
With conventional chrome plating the thickness of the different
layers of metals applied does not allow for flexibility this can
result in a failure of the part. The process does not use
hexavalent chromium the main environmental problem of
conventional chrome. It can also be tinted to achieve colors
such as gold, black chrome, even red, blue or green. The only
down side of this new process is that the durability is
comparable to that of a high-end industrial or automotive
finish. Chemical metalizing has not yet reached the level to
take over all of hard chroming uses but is now a viable solution
for most chroming needs. To learn more or find out if our
process could work for you please contact me.

Author: Todd Robinson

Everything is negotiable, it just comes down to if you wish to put alternating the accomplishment to negotiate. In my activity I accept endemic no beneath than 15 cars , that agency car repairs. If your car is in the boutique for aliment it's a different situation, you accept no ascendancy or accurate adeptness of what REALLY is bare and what isn't. There accept been several "special reports" on account programs with clandestine cameras assuming mechanics damaging or lying to barter about aliment that are needed. What to Do When Your Car is Damaged by a Hail Storm
Author: Duane Langenfeld
Source: ezinearticles.com
The hail storm strikes!
When a hail storm strikes your area there is usually a lot of uncertainty. Through most peoples lives, their property will never be hit with damaging hail. But what if it does? What do you do? Here is a list of basic instructions to follow after a hail storm.
Inspect your car. (Look for broken glass, tail lights, and anything else that could endanger you)
Call your insurance provider. Ask for a rental car. Hail is considered an "Act of God" and sometimes you have NO DEDUCTIBLE.
Take it to your local body shop you trust. They can give you and estimate based on PDR. -----Your DO NOT have to go to the body shop your insurance company "recommends".
Take it to a second body shop or a paintless dent repair (PDR) tech for a second estimate.
If you have a deductible, ask the body shop for help with it. Especially if you are having your car PDR'd.
If you are taking your car to a hail repair company that sometimes sets up after a large hail storm be sure they can service any warranty work after they leave town.
After the repairs are finished, demand (nicely) to inspect the car under florescent lights. Scan the car using the overhead lights. Look for missed dents, and improperly repaired dents.
You do not have to pay them if the repairs haven't brought the car back to it's pre-damaged state. Ask them to fix any areas that aren't repaired completely.
A couple of side notes:
The PDR tech may use a dent puller with glue, this is a safe procedure for most cars.
Often times at the beginning of a major storm, insurance companies are just trying to get through the process of repairing hundreds, even thousands of damaged vehicles. Be patient. If you can wait a couple of weeks, you can get your car repaired after the "rush" PDR techs face directly after a storm.
Although avoiding out of town techs seems smart, I beg to differ. If you find your local body shop has hired one in to do his PDR work, then the ultimately it is on the Body shop for the final repair. It is in the body shop's best interest to hire a competent tech. It is hard to gauge how good a tech is that sets up an independent shop though.
Good luck!

Biopro 190 - Home Biodiesel Equipment (Part 4)
Author: Nathan Young
Source: ezinearticles.com
The little brother to the Biopro 380 is the Biopro 190. It was invented by HER energy which is a company out of Chico, California that manufactures these. It is the original unit that they produced. They then moved up to a 380, which can do 100 gallons, then they also have a small one that can do 40 gallons. This unit allows you to make 50 gallons of fuel every 48 hours. It works exactly like the larger unit, only it's smaller so it would fit perfectly in a garage. It handily doesn't say biodiesel on it anywhere, so it doesn't give you away as to what you're doing in your garage. It just says Biopro 190. It does make wonderful biodiesel. In fact, the fuel made in this machine is so good, when done right, that you can actually pass what are called the ASTM standards for biodiesel, which allows you the opportunity to apply to sell the fuel. We've tested it multiple times, we know it's good. What we're going to do now is, we actually have made a batch in this machine, and if our camera will pan down near the bottom here, we'll notice that we have finished fuel. We have drained off the glycerin, from this machine, and so we now have 50 gallons, of washed, dried, reactive, ready to use fuel to put in our vehicles. And so how we're going to work this is I have a handy hose that attaches to the bottom of this unit, and then we're going to attach it to a hose up above, and this hose happens to attach to not just any fuel filler pump, but a GPI fuel filler pump, the best in the industry. It pumps massive amounts of fuel, incredibly fast. So I hook this up, and just like having a gas station at my house, I open my valve down at the bottom, pull off my fuel filler pump, I turn it on, and I walk over to a barrel, and I've got fuel.
Beautiful, golden fuel, ready to use in my vehicle for under a dollar a gallon. This fuel filler pump just chugs like a banshee? Take a look at how beautiful golden color that is. We're going to fill this barrel and another barrel all the way full. This can actually be put right into a vehicle. The fuel that comes out of these Biopro's is so incredibly clear that I'm going to take this glass jar, and put a little bit of it in it, and you'll be amazed at how clear this is. In fact, this looks cleaner than most diesel fuel. I'll put this in here and keep that going. While I'm fueling I have beautiful, crystal clear fuel that I can now put in diesels. One of the benefits of using this is, I've made this fuel for 96 cents a gallon and then I get to turn around and claim the tax credit because I use waste vegetable oil to make it. I'm making' fuel for 46 cents a gallon, that's pretty darn cool to me. We've now filled up the barrel below it, so we decided to fill the one up above it. Nothing' like free fuel huh? Again, to do this, we've gone out and collected oil, we've come back, we've filtered it, we've put it in the machine, we've added some chemicals, we let it rip, we came back and drained off the glycerin. Then we washed it. Then we let it dry, and we have pure gold baby. Biodiesel, the truck, the fuel, everything you need to get down the road.
One of the benefits of the Biopro 190, 380 and the 150 is that they automatically wash. In fact, all I have to do to wash a batch is press the wash button. It begins a batch, spraying water in, and it just takes care of it. It also dries it. However, we have no oil in here so I can actually manually override everything so I can make stuff any way I want. And then we're going to turn on the water so we can show you how great the water actually going' in is.
So we've now just finished draining this fuel, you can hear it kind of screaming here. We now put 50 gallons of biodiesel into these barrels over here, and so we're now finished. So we now have the complete process. So we've now shown you from start to finish how to make fuel; we bring it in, we filter it, we haven't had to titrate in this setting if you've noticed, and that's because these machines use sulfuric acid, as long as we know that they titrate below 16, which is about 5% free fatty-acid, these machines will handle it. They really don't care about high free fatty-acid oil. The oil does have to be fairly dry just like we talked about earlier, but if it's dry oil, and it's below 5% free fatty-acid, we simply throw it in here. We always have the same amount of chemicals every time, we push the buttons and we let them rip. The cost on these machines is a little bit high, but you're getting an industrial grade machine for the Biopro 190 it runs about 8,395 plus shipping. It's eight thousand three hundred and ninety five dollars. And then for the Biopro 380, which is the hundred gallon unit it runs about 12,995 dollars. If you're interested in seeing a machine anywhere near you, we have a full network of dealers. We have them all over the United States, and we're moving into different countries as well. I happen to also be a dealer of Utah biodiesel supply, and if you can't find one contact me and I can put you in touch with someone who's bought one who would like to show it off. It's kind of like a nice new toy, we all like to brag about them. They're wonderful machines, they're incredibly sturdy, made of thick stainless steel, industrial grade components throughout them, and they make biodiesel batch after batch after batch. How's that? Thanks for watching. We hope to see you again.

Are You Over Polishing Your Car's Paint?
Author: David Bynon
Source: articleage.com
I have been reading a lot of threads on the Autopia.org forum lately that basically start with people asking "what polish should I use?" I couldn't help but think, how do I best avoid using an abrasive polish all together?
I posted the basic content of this article on Autopia to see what members had to say. The conversation was interesting and insightful.
I think it's time for a completely different discussion about paint polishing. What I strive to achieve is the highest level of paint perfection without altering the structure of the paint. Once I get there, I want to use the proper tools and techniques to keep my paint looking perfect.
When I have a paint problem, I want to be able to fix it without removing excessive clearcoat that I need to maintain a deep-looking finish. I'm a huge advocate of spot treatment. I rarely take an abrasive polishing compound to an entire body panel, or worse, the whole car. It simply isn't necessary.
I have the distinct feeling from reading many Autopia threads that people are buying step 1-2-3 products and using all of them because that's what they feel is necessary to achieve "the best results". In no way is this use of paint polish an appropriate way to care for paint.
RULE 1: Do less damage than the damage that already exists.
My experience shows me that 95% of all paint issues can be resolved with a very fine polish, the right tools and the right technique. So, why is it that so many people are willing to reach for a harsh compound as the first step... when it should be the last resort?
Autopia Member fotodad writes:
"You make many excellent points! I tend to get all caught up in having the "best" most glossy finish I can have, but I never thought about actually doing more harm than good. I truly believe (after reading your post) that detailing can reach a point of diminishing returns once we get involved in all these assorted polishes and paint preparation products. Certainly no one would dispute the need to keep an automobile's finish clean of dirt and general debris via weekly or even daily cleaning. But is it really necessary or even smart to polish and wax or just wax more than once every two months?
Often times neighbors will walk past my house while I'm detailing and they'll jokingly say, "You're going to rub the paint right off the car!" I laugh, call them a few choice names under my breath and continue polishing. But maybe they've got a point!"
Your neighbors are correct, fotodad, you are going to polish the paint off your car. I know, as I have done it!
There is a class of paint polish that can be used to maintain gloss without abrasives that thin your paint. These polishes are most commonly called pre-wax cleaners. The polishing (gloss enhancing) action is a combination of chemical cleaners that remove embedded dirt and very fine polishes that maintain gloss. The polishing "abrasive" is about the consistency of talcum powder. My two favorite products are Sonus Paintwork Cleanser and P21S Paintwork Cleansing Lotion. There are many others.
RULE 2: Don't remove clearcoat you may need some day!
We all talk about gloss, depth and clarity, but are you stopping to think about what you might be doing to each of these final finish characteristics each time you take an abrasive polish to your paint? You might be seeing more gloss, but it's coming at the expense of depth and maybe even paint finish clarity.
Most professional polishes are designed to be used with a rotary buffer, by an experienced technician. When you use these polishes by hand or dual-action (DA) polisher, you put scratches in your paint finish that will not come out by using the next polish up in the line.

"Glad you mentioned the lack of depth that can result from excessive polishing. You really can see the way a thin clearcoat lacks depth. My '95 Caprice is a good example of that; you can tell that the previous owner tried a little too hard to 'polish it up'. Now I can either live with how it looks or repaint, but I can't do much more polishing. I don't need a paint thickness gauge to tell me there isn't a normal amount of clearcoat on it."
There's no doubt that the clearcoat on the modern car finish creates the beauty of the finish. To retain the good looks, the clearcoat must remain clean and finely polished. Heavy polishing will reduce finish clarity and depth.

"I posted a question about this exact topic when I came to the forums on one of my early visits. I raised the issue of how much polishing and abrasive use can be done before you are actually just wearing the paint thin. I also read the study that one guy did about abrasives on paint over on the Meguiar's forum. He tried several products on a hood panel, and after each use measured with a paint thickness gauge. It became clear that you REALLY have to get aggressive to remove any significant amount of clear or paint, but nonetheless the points in this thread are good. After time all the less aggressive products effects become cumulative, and may start to do more harm than good."
It should be noted that a proper paint finish (primer, color and clearcoat) is only 6-8 thousandths (6/1000) of an inch thick. If your car has a quality clearcoat, it will be about half of that total paint thickness. Removing 1-2 thousandths of and inch of clearcoat happens in a matter of seconds with an abrasive polish.
My business partner got a 3-inch long scratch in the clearcoat of his new Lexus SC. I used a spot pad and a corrective polish to pull most of the scratch out so it would pass the 5 foot test. He said "...but I can still see a trace of the scratch close-up..." I explained that if I removed more material we risked thinning the clearcoat and creating a patch of paint that no longer matches the rest of the finish.
Sometimes, enough is enough. The skill is learning how to read the paint and knowing what the final result will be when you use a product.
RULE 3: Know for a fact what tasks the products you're using were designed to perform.
Are you using a polish designed to be used on an automotive assembly line by a technician with a 4-inch spot pad on a pneumatic polisher to remove 2400 grit sanding marks? If so, what are the equivalent pad specs, rotation speed and polish time to remove your 5000 grit equivalent swirl marks?
Are you using a refinisher's panel blending compound originally designed to cut and blend fresh paint using a wool pad as a general purpose cutting compound? If so, can your foam cutting pad effectively generate enough heat on your DA to break down the abrasives to prevent paint scouring?
The fact is, very few abrasive polish systems were designed from the ground up to be a DA polishing system. Very few others have bothered to correctly match "general purpose" polishes with polishing pads and proper instructions to create a system.
Autopia Member Accumulator writes:
"As for the abrasive products, I generally find myself using (and recommending) those that can be used by hand/PC/rotary. Nothing that requires any real specialize technique or equipment. You might not get the best results without a rotary, but you won't do any real damage either. I sort of cringe reading recommendations to use rotary-only products by hand or PC."
Again, I reiterate buyer beware. All abrasive polishes have abrasive particles with different characteristics. Abrasives have different size, shape and hardness. Some abrasive particles are designed to break down into smaller, finer abrasives as the polish is applied. Others are designed to cut continuously at the same rate.
PAINT CARE WITHOUT ABRASIVES
Most new car finishes can be properly maintained without using abrasive (corrective) polishes. Doing so requires smart paint care, including regular washing and waxing, use of proper wash and wax tools (wash mitts, applicators, towels, etc.) and cautious parking. Finish damage avoidance is the best way to maintain a perfect finish. Nothing will swirl a paint finish faster than a bad wash mitt or drying towels.
If you park away from soccer moms and shopping carts, and wash your car using proper tools, you can keep the finish free of light surface damage for a long time. When your paint does get marred, the problem can be locally treated by hand or with a spot pad with a corrective polish.

"I've always thought that it's preferable to get rid of or lessen a scratch by filling it rather than taking actual paint off. That's always the way I've always operated. IMO [in my opinion] the more paint on the car, the better. I was taught to start with the least abrasive product and work your way up.
Maybe it's because I'm a wuss when it comes to using a buffer on the paint. I still do it all by hand. I have to admit that I am impressed by the pictures I've seen here of cars that are too far gone for a simple hand polish that have cleaned up nicely with a polisher."
This is a great approach. Many wax products can be layered to help cover minor surface marring. My favorite combination is Klasse All-In-One followed by P21S Carnauba Wax. Others swear by the Zaino polish system.

"I'm often reminded of that old saying, "moderation in all things " The trick is to learn to live with the minor imperfections and reach a happy medium where you take care of the issues that lead to the problem - proper wash, protection, etc. If you have a problem that needs immediate attention then take care of it, if you have issues (swirling, etc.) take care of the swirls when it crosses your individual threshold for tolerance. Just make sure you set your standard at a point that you're not obsessed."
I could not agree more with laefd's comments. Moderation is the key.
I offer the following advice for proper long-term paint finish on new and like-new cars:
Wash weekly (as possible) using a quality car wash, wash mitt and drying towels.
Deep clean paint twice a year with detailing clay.
Polish paint 3-4 times a year with a pre-wax, non-abrasive polish.
Seal paint 3-4 times a year with a quality paint sealant.
Protect your paint finish from damage by other motorists and pedestrians.
These five simple steps will keep your paint looking great without the need to use heavy polishes for corrective action.

How Selected to Buy Salvage Parts Save Money on Auto Repairs
Author: Ronnie W Tanner
Source: ezinearticles.com
Up until now, vehicle repairs have been much like trips to the dentist: painful but necessary. Today that landscape is changing and although auto repairs are still a necessary evil, there is a way to lessen the amount of pain i.e. money involved in the process. The way to do this is utilize the used parts industry. Springing up all over the country in the past decade, auto recyclers are now in just about every city throughout the United States. They are the original recyclers and offer much to the communities they serve.
Once a vehicle becomes inoperable, it is usually of little use to the person or company that owns it. However due to the intricate and interconnected way in which an engine functions, many parts on an inoperable vehicle remain in excellent working order even though the whole engine no longer works. This is where auto recyclers come into the picture. While the automobile has no value to its owner because it no longer performs the function for which it was purchased - transportation- the auto recycler has another use in mind and will gladly compensate the owner of the car in order to obtain it. This arrangement benefits both parties and the community as a whole. The owner receives at least some money for the vehicle, the auto recycler receives an inventory of parts and the community does not have the economic or ecological strain of dealing with a large useless piece of machinery. This is one of the few win-win scenarios in the world today.
Once the inoperable vehicle has been purchased by the auto recycler, the vehicle is moved to its dismantling facility. Here the process begins. First, all hazardous materials must be removed from the vehicle. There are more than you might think. Once this is finished, technicians go over the automobile thoroughly to discover what parts are in good working condition. Once this has been assessed and the parts are removed, then the rest of vehicle is stripped of plastics and the vehicle is sent to the crusher or shredder. Here, the left over metal frame of the car is compacted and the steel that is left is then recycled back into anything from new parts to completely new vehicles. It has been estimated that since 1997, enough steel has been recovered from salvaged automobiles to build 13 million new ones.
Once the good working parts of a salvaged vehicle have been removed, they are now ready to be returned to use. Most auto recyclers today utilize direct access inventory systems that connect them with other auto recyclers, mechanics and consumers through the internet. When a particular part is needed, all one needs to do is a simple internet search. This system makes it easy to compare prices and in many cases, auto recyclers will compete for your business. If the part is located close enough one can even drive over, inspect the part, and pick it up that day. For parts located further than that, most auto recyclers are happy to ship even large parts right to the consumer or mechanics door. Most reputable auto recyclers provide at least a minimal warranty on the parts they sell, also. As for the actual savings to be had on used parts, it is estimated that most of these parts can be obtained at up to half of what the same part may cost new. Now everyone can enjoy that savings.

The Aarp Defensive Driving Program - A Senior Driver's Friend
Author: Jean Littman
Source: articledashboard.com
The number of car accidents which are now happening frequently amongst the senior population is quite staggering. A report published recently in USA Today discovered that accidents involving senior drivers are being claimed at a rate more than 70% higher than back in1999.
Driving is now getting more and more difficult for those drivers who are over 55. Cars are more powerful, traffic is heavier and road rules are forever changing. The AARP has a driver safety program which is helping better educate senior drivers in defensive driving techniques and road safety.
For those who are wondering just who the AARP is, they are a powerful association which pushes the rights and security of those American citizens who are over the age of 55. The AARP acknowledges that preventing all senior citizens from driving is not practical, and is in fact discriminatory. Bearing this in mind, the AARP developed their defensive driving program with the aim of updating and renewing the driving capabilities of seniors still behind the wheel.
Letting go of driving privileges can be embarrassing and depressing at any age. Many older drivers find it increases the stresses that accompany growing older and being able to do less as the years roll by. A prime example of this is where a senior driver can easily pass the compulsory eye examination, but critical reaction times and reflexes are now much slower.
The AARP Driver Safety Class - What Is It?
A better name for the AARP Driver Safety Class would be the AARP Defensive Driving class. Not only does it update skills on driver safety, but it teaches skills to help seniors avoid getting into accidents in the first place.
Motor vehicle insurance companies now accept AARP defensive driving classes as a requisite for car insurance rebates. By undertaking an AARP defensive driving class, senior drivers can not only save money, but can also indicate to insurance companies that they are serious about driving safely and avoiding accidents.
AARP Defensive Driving Safety Classes - Where Are They?
AARP defensive driving course are situated in many localities - finding one nearby is not that hard. The AARP website is easily accessible online, and seniors can search to see what classes would suit them. For those who do not have the internet, the AARP can be contacted by telephone on free-call 1-888-AARP-NOW (1-888-227-7669). AARP volunteers will respond with information about suitable AARP defensive driving courses within 3 to 5 working days.
At a cost of round $10, and AARP defensive driving course is reasonably priced. A course usually goes for two days and has approximately four hours daily class contact time. Course objectives of and AARP defensive driving course are:
1. Updating driving skills and knowledge of road rules.
2. Awareness of normal physical changes related to ageing, and what driving adjustments to make.
3. Learning the warning signs which precede finishing with driving altogether.
4. Reducing or eliminating traffic violations, accidents, and potential injury.
5. Drive more safely on the road.
6. Obtain insurance discounts. Car insurance companies usually provide discounts to AARP graduates.
In current times when those from the "baby boomer" generation are becoming seniors, there are more seniors driving than ever before. As the first and largest driving course in the United States for over 55's, the AARP Driver Safety Program is helping millions in the senior driving category remain safe whilst driving on the roads.
For the last 25 years, the AARP driver safety program has been offered in classroom format. Now seniors can access the same course online. For those"seniors" still driving wanting to do so for many years to come, enrolling in your nearest AARP defensive driving course is a no-brainer!

Powder Coating 101: How Does It Work?
Author: Jason Helferich
Source: articleage.com
Everybody is talking about the process of powder coating automotive parts. Powder coating has grown in popularity over the past few years for a number of reasons. How many of us see powder coating being used on shows like "American Chopper" or "Overhaulin'"? The general public knows from watching these shows that powder coating is out there. But what is powder coating and how exactly is it done? Anybody know?
Preparation is imperative in achieving a quality finish. The item being coated must be completely bare of any paint, dirt, oil, or any other substance. To achieve this, sandblasting equipment is used. If it is not possible to use this equipment, it must be done with chemicals or by hand. The items are then baked to remove any moisture from the metal. After all materials have been stripped off, the item is treated with a degreasing solution to help prevent corrosion.
Powder coating is a process by which selected items are coated with a fine powder of ground resin and pigment, which is basically ground up paint particles that form a powder-like substance. The items being coated are placed on a rack, which grounds the items. A gun is used to spray the powder onto the items. A large oven is then used to heat and cure the coating. Temperatures used to cure the items typically are between 400 and 450 degrees. Heating the items makes the pigments melt, gel, and then cure to form a durable finish. The finished product is a uniform coating. Powder coating can be used on steel, zinc, and aluminum as well as other materials. The quality of the finished product has the ability to outlast and outperform painted parts. A variety of up to a few hundred different colors are available to choose from. It also exceeds paint in resisting acids, solvents, impact, and abrasions.
Powder coating can be used to coat items such as valve covers, wheels, bumpers, trim parts, engine parts, sway bars, coil springs, strut bars, and many items in between. There are many options as to who does the powder coating for you. There are companies in most metropolitan areas that either exclusively powder coat or companies that offer it along with their other services. Online companies also play into the equation with a number offering services as well. There are normally two systems for purchasing powder coated parts. For popular parts, companies may stock core parts available to be coated in a variety of colors. You order the part and ship yours back for a core. For more custom jobs, you must remove the part and ship it to the powder coater. Companies such as Eastwood also sell do-it-yourself kits. These kits start at $99 and you can use an electric oven or toaster oven to bake and cure the finish. An air compressor capable of a 5-10 PSI output is also required.
So the next time you hear about powder coating on TV or anywhere else, you will now have an idea of how that actual process is performed. Powder coating is superior to normal painting if you want a finish that holds up better and lasts longer. Check it out today!!

Should I Use Wax On My Car?
Author: Gregg Hall
Source: articleage.com
This is a question coming up more and more especially since
January of 2005 when the United States and other governments
announced a mandatory reduction in the use of volatile organic
compounds or VOCs in manufacturing processes and consumable
products. As of this writing in January of 2006, car care
products may not consist of more than 15% VOC. This is major bad
news for companies specializing in Carnauba wax which must use
large amounts of solvents to make the naturally rock hard
Carnauba soft and pliable so that it can be used.
Many companies had to drop entire lines of car wax products;
some had to re-engineer their products. There are some others
who are ignoring the regulations until sanctions are imposed
against them. There is a revolution taking place in the car wax
industry and it's about time!
Most of us grew up using Turtle Wax or some form of Carnauba Wax
on our cars and I am no different. But, once I found out about
the superiority of polymer based products like the PTFE based
product from CarCareWizards.com I quickly became a big fan. Now,
don't get me wrong, I enjoy cleaning and shining my car but when
I can use a product that will last for 150 washes instead of 15
or 20, I have to go with the 150! More on this in a minute,
first let's just cover some basics on how to apply car waxes and
paint sealants.
These tips should be followed regardless of whether you are
using car wax or a paint sealant:
First off, always work in a shaded area where the vehicle
surface is not exposed to direct sunlight. Use a foam applicator
pad for applying the wax or sealant and use a new one if it
becomes caked in wax.
Work on a small area at a time, we recommend an area of around 2
to 4 foot square at a time, this will allow you to concentrate
on small area and will give you better results. Follow the
individual manufacturer instructions as to whether you should
allow the product to haze before you begin buffing.
If the residue does not easily buff to a shine, use a new clean
towel. Always apply the product in a back and forth movement,
circles will create swirls.
When you are done, the car's finish should be smooth and have no
swirls, streaks, or smudges.

Aftermarket Hood Installation Guide
Author: Jason Durity
Source: articleage.com
The following is a general guide to installing an aftermarket hood onto your car. We only provide these instructions to give you an idea of what you will need to do in order to install the hood. We highly recommend that you have your hood installed by a professional experienced in aftermarket installation.Removing Your Existing Hood: To remove your existing stock hood, you will need the assistance of a friend or two. Begin by lifting the hood up and remove the hood shocks first. Once you have the hood shocks off, you'll need someone to support the hood. Now disconnect the window washer fluid lines by pulling them off. Just pull off from the plastic adapter.Remove the 4 bolts attaching the hood to the hinges. Do one side at a time, with someone holding the other side. Once the hood is off, place in safe place so it doesn't fall on anyone. Small children and family pets could be seriously injured if a hood were to fall on them.Installing Your New Hood: Take your new hood and place it on the hinges. Using an allen-key simply screw in the bolts that your new hood came with. We do not recommend using your old stock screws to install the new hood.Once you have installed the hood, open and close it to check the fitment. If the hood is too high attempt readjusting the bolts to have it line up better. If that does not work, remove the front grill and unbolt the hood hook-latch to position it lower. You can also try screwing in or removing the rubber knubs on either side of the sub frame. To finish the job, just reconnect the washer fluid lines and plastic adapters.http://www.AutoSportz.com http://www.autosportz.com/article_install_carbon_fiber_hood.htm

Auto Technology - Audi and Volkswagon, Radar Following and Auto Safety
Author: Lance Winslow
Source: articleage.com
Where is the new auto technology? Where is it? We have it now, shouldn't we use it to reduce the 42,000 deaths in automobiles per year? We seem to be getting the shaft on all this new technology which could save lives in automobiles and seem to be a little behind Germany even though much of the technology has come from our own MIT genius kids here. This is because the Big Three are trying to shave costs to compete and now we see with the dollar down and the Euro up that now the foreign car makers are also cutting their safety features on many models for instance: Volkswagen to cut costs and reduce investment. Volkswagen said it would cut costs and reduce investment after profits more than halved last year and sales of its latest Golf V hatchback got off to a weak start.Meanwhile it's parent company Audi is busy testing some new radar assisted driving and anti-collision products in proving grounds in AZ.I recently had the opportunity to have coffee with the head engineer from Audi and he explained the problem of getting the technology into American cars is that they were worried about class action lawsuits and cost so they were not going to put in the newest ECS devices:http://www.parthe.net/_oilchange0104/00000008.htmWhat is most unfortunate about this is that 42,000 people die a year in auto accidents in this country now. We can fix that, of course this new technology will become victim of class action law suits. We need to immediately kill all the attorneys, Shakespeare was right, Caesar said it best, then we can move forward to save lives. In Germany on many of the Audi models they have radar assisted following devices. For every 1 kilometer per hour the car is back half that distance so at 60 KPH the car is behind the car in front of it by 30 meters. Works great and several new cars have assisted white right line following also. Also they have a system that if a car is parked in front of you in the lane, your car lets off the accelerator and slightly tightens the seatbelts like the Honda SmartCar and then the steering wheel puts pressure to go around the obstacle, as your reflexes then take over. The new ESC also interfaces with this system but it needs to be an all-wheel drive car for it to all work. This would help in Winter Weather safety too. We have also seen the weather is changing consumer buying behavior for all wheel drive vehicles on passenger cars as well as SUVs, so people will not be bothered with putting on chains on their cars. Due to the desire by car buyers to have a "go-anywhere, do-anything" capable car after the recent SUV trend we see that consumers have developed an affinity for this freedom in all their car choices.Automakers are also seeing this it appears and are ready to satisfy the shift in preference by selling more cars that transfer engine power to all four corners - commonly called all-wheel drive, not four wheel drive although that too is way up in demand, all-wheel drive also shifts control around the car as you drive and is a SmartCar Technology. By 2006, car buyers who want All- wheel drive will have their choice of some 42 models, according to Industry Analysts and the website Gurus? This a 2/3 increase from the 2003-2004 model year. We have even heard estimates that by 2008, the number of all- wheel-drive cars on the road will double by today's count, well at least this is what Ford's Visteon Corp., unit is saying and of course they hope so since they are a supplier of all- wheel-drive technology and other SmartCar electronic systems. For automakers, the rising demand for all-wheel-drive cars means greater profits and higher costs on cars for such options. All-wheel-drive systems now cost up to $1,500 as optional equipment. The growing interest in all-wheel drive is obvious after checking out the Detroit Auto Show prototype cars. All these cars will have superior handling and better cornering for those 10 PM to midnight canyon burner runs at Mach 2, which if you are a real car lover you fully understand. Automakers with only rear-drive models cars may find this a challenge since the consumer now has a choice of All-wheel drive as well as manufacturers who have bee spending years convincing consumers that front-wheel drive is better on bad roads. Now consumers can have it all, those confused consumers will most likely opt for the both or All scenario. All-wheel drive essentially offers the best of both worlds.Just over 50 percent of American women and 55 percent of their male counterparts surveyed said they prefer All wheel for safety and/or performance, along with the obvious benefit of better traction. Smart Cars are making friends and influencing people and the safety benefit to all is very incredible. SmartCars and Intelligent transportation. If we look at the history of smart car type technologies we will see that this is always how it starts. It wasn't more than a decade or two ago that we sought and anti-locking braking systems, or ABS. At first, this was the safety benefit and only an option and only available on the high-end cars. Recently we've seen GPS navigation systems available as an option, now many the luxury cars, it comes standard. We're seeing this trend also on midrange cars and SUVs. It wasn't too long that airbags came onto the seen at first a safety item and an option later became standard on most of midrange and high-end vehicles, now airbags are on nearly every car, at least for the driver. About 50% of the models in Europe have the ESC options with all-wheel drive and in the US about 6% do to the need to cut the costs and still sell the cars.In 30 years fatalities in Germany are down about 70% in the US per mile driven about 20%, which is good, but we can still do better. Remember when th big news came out about Firestone? Well actually only 3% of fatal rollovers were from tire wear, the rest from driving conditions and pilot error. Loss of control of about 20% of these accidents could have been prevented by ESC and it will be mandatory on 8-15 passenger vans by 2006.http://www.parthe.net/_oilchangeguys/0000005c.htmThese figures from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Arlington, VA. In a German study Mercedes reduced the loss of control accidents by 21% by adding ESC to all their models. Interestingly enough you cannot get ESC on a Ford Explorer since that option does not exist until you get to the Expedition or Excursion SUVs. 4-Runner by Toyota has it available here in the US. There is an interesting article on this in Business Week, April 28 2003 by Christine Tierney which is true even more today than the day she put pen to paper. When we discussed these issues with our Audi Engineer friend; he said that on the A3 through A8 Audi there was an option for $3000-4000 for the radar following devices, and in Europe you can order your car your way. As a matter of fact on an A3 the most basic model there are 350 possible combinations for bumper configurations, between types of fog lights, color, design, etc. Also and unfortunately the German government has found a way to put infrared picture cameras which will send you a ticket in the mail for speeding, once again we did perfect the German radar in WWII and they have used their military technology for civil use to collect fines from speeders with this new infrared devices. We are seeing more and more camera red light unmanned devices on our road ways and automatic ticket cameras in the United States now.Luckily the radar assisted following auto-pilot does not work under 20 mph so in the city or stop and go on the Belt Way, Boston Tunnel, 405 FWY, I-5 in Seattle or I-10 in Houston it will not work. Also the hands free cell phone hooked to the radio is not an option but a must as the ticket is 80.00 Euros if you have your cell phone on while driving unless hooked-up. And for GM and all the wonderful hotshots that think they are going to own the China car market you might want to think again the Audi A6 for China market is already made there. Surely eventually once they ramp up it is highly likely they will emerge market winners, but at this early stage they are behind the gun. Also realize that in the larger cities, they cannot take anymore cars, the traffic is insane, better off to walk or bicycle around. In Beijing there is a 100% in one-year growth rate for additional cars. Talk about traffic you would be better off to catch a cart, moped or walk. Although the A6 in China is bare bones and nearly without suspension to save money, it is their foothold into the Chinese market. Currently being tested is a Diesel car is not connected to any drive train. It runs a steady 1800-2000 RPM and the most efficient for the least amount of pollution which charges batteries while driving or parked and runs 42 volts electrical system, which is hooked to each wheel with a motor to turn the wheels, likewise all the power steering, and other components runs on the electricity. They also have out now an Audi A8, which puts out 330 HP and an R56 which puts out 450 HP. The interesting thing getting back to the electric-diesel hybrid is the efficiency and cleanliness. It is a really good system. So Ford is also on the move lately: FORD LAUNCHES INTELLIGENT HIGHWAY REVOLUTION:Eventually, almost all municipal vehicles could be outfitted with the new wireless sensor technology.http://www.pressi.com/int/release/86700.htmlAll in all you have to be a little more impressed with what Audi is really doing than what Ford is planning on; I am not sure if this is of value to you, but I met the head engineer from Audi working on the A' series A4 A6 A8 etc. from Germany, I think he was on his way to the Proving Ground in AZ and he was talking about the radar assisted following devices they use in Germany. Had some interesting things and doing some secret tests. How these devises would be installed for $3,000 US as an option once the tort laws were reduced and they would be hitting the dealerships as soon as that happened. The car follows half the distance of the speed. 50 miles per hour 25 feet. Their all wheel drive system would hook up to it and if the car was stopped in the lane and no cars in beside it, it would go to the next lane providing there was no solid line. Also integrated was the auto-pilot technology of following the line on the right. Too many lawsuits for finish products liability has slowed progress but with partial class action lawsuit reform we may see more risk taking with these new technologies.Audi did some work in the United States in the ITS arena during not to long ago at DENSO - i.e. car navigation systems/GPS. Some of the thoughts of the programmers of these systems were that people fail to realize that if you keep a vehicle in motion it actually emits less tailpipe emissions. Constant idling, and stop and go are the worst conditions for emissions, so the savings is also to the health of the public and might even reduce health care insurance. Now then there are other companies working on this stuff in the US too. This is absolutely wonderful technology you are working on. An interactive SmartCar. The issues is with economies of scale and price. With the Big Three cutting costs, we are not getting the technology we should in the states. The problem I see is with ABS and All-wheel drive or ESC it is hard to get full value out of all the other technologies.I spoke with Honda about the seat belt tightening and letting off the accelerator and believe this is of value, I am glad you are working on this. Now, then as the Audi guy was telling me they are testing a car, which runs a certain speed all the time so it does not pollute at optimum. And then it charges batteries, which run all wheel drive on a system, which has all the best technologies. They are running this thing 7000 hours. The guy I met from Germany had been cruising the country talking to people. If the little and smaller engine runs at 1800 RPMs to 2000 and is quiet like an Onan Generator it could run quiet on diesel and charge the batteries and run at the 42-volt system? Power steering, ABS, each wheel has a motor. If a motor goes out you feather the props on the motor across from it and it becomes two-wheel drive until fixed by using a small centrical clutch. All runs net-centric. Works for me and is much better for all the HUD displays, portable business office WiFi, email, GPS, Internet Faxing, CD, DVD, movie and video systems. It is making a better and smarter car on a similar platform in looks but the guts are totally re done. Just building smarter, more efficient and better cars, it makes sense for the 42,000 who die each year in auto accidents. With stop and go traffic, Diamond car pool lanes, toll booths all messing up traffic flows the issues of environment are almost as good as the 15% less accidents that are fatal per year. Mercedes showed 15% with ESC alone, imagine all this technology we are speaking with now. But the price is the selling point to US Manufacturers and of course if people keep their cars 3.2 years on average but finance them for 8 years other issues ensue. Also long term rentals will need GPS and Satellite RFID ping finding devices; Enterprise Rent a Car rolls out long term rentals and we believe this may in fact be good.Let's face it cars are getting smarter and people are getting dumber. I guess Audi is going to do this on their Pasat, A4, A6 and later the A8. So the Smart US Big Three need to stay heads up. And you bet they will as the new technologies are sure to heat up the car sales competition amongst consumers. 40% of consumers are said to rank auto safety their number one or two priority in choosing their next car."Lance Winslow" - Online Think Tank forum board. The SVS II Deluxe Valve Refacer is the most accurate ValveRefacer made today..0005 accuracy for standard chuck and .0002 accuracy forhigh-performance chuck. The Industry's Best. The Kwik-Way CenterLine Chuck is what makes the SVS II ValveRefacer a cut above all the rest. Other Valve Refacers useChucks, referred to as "center less". These use rollers to gripthe valve stem while the Kwik-way Chuck uses two sets ofindependent balls that grip the stem at two very distinctpoints. The advantage being, if you have a center less chuck andyou're trying to grind an in-service valve, if there is anyout-of-round on the valve stem, that out-of-round is transferredfrom the rollers on the center less chuck to the valve face. Soyour face run out will be no better than your stem run-out.With the Kwik-way Chuck, since it uses two sets of balls thatcapture the valve in the wear area of the stem, willautomatically re-centerline the valve. What that means is whenwe grind the valve, the face will come out true to the centerline of the stem that actually rides in the valve guide. In other words, if there is some wear on the stem surface theKwik-Way Chuck is going to compensate for that wear in such away that the resulting ground valve face is perfectly centeredwhen the valve is back in the engine. Some valve manufacturers design their valves with a taperedstem. Because of the unique way The Kwik-Way Chuck grabs thevalve stem, taper has no influence on the precision of thepositioning of the valve in the chuck. Other Valve RefacerChucks may cause the valve to tilt in the chuck. Without a wayto compensate for valve stem taper, you cannot reface the valvewith the same amount of accuracy as with a Kwik-Way machine. The Kwik-Way Chuck is air activated. You simply push a buttonthat will release the two sets of balls and allow you to insertthe valve. You will have a range of 4mm to 14.3mm with thestandard or high perfermance valve chuck.Another type if chuck used on other machines is a collet chuck. To give you the range of 4mm to 14.3mm you would need at least 5or as many as 9 different collets to cover that range. As younow know, with the SVS II, there is no change over required forvarious stem diameters. And as you change collets there can beproblems with repeatability because you can put the collet inthe receiver with dirt or grit between the receiver and thecollet. In that case, you will get inaccuracy. Also, if you havea tapered valve, the collet will not compress to the sametension at both points so again with a collet chuck and atapered valve you get inaccuracy. The same is true with an out-of-round valve. Because the colletwants to compress uniformly around the circumference of thestem. The bottom line is that the other chucks grab the valvestem using a greater amount of the valve surface, which can be aproblem if there are any irregularities in that valve. The SVS II D comes standard with tip grinding and rockergrinding capability. It can also chamfer tips. There are nooptional accessories necessary to perform these functions.Unlike with other machines where you will find that you have topurchase additional accessories in order to do these other jobsor to get the same amount of valve stem diameter range as theKwik-Way SVS II Deluxe Valve Refacer. You can transition from valve refacing to tip grinding or rockerarm grinding operations for shaft mounted types of rockers inless than minutes. And it's all standard with the machine.Kwik-Way Valve Grinding Wheels are very reasonably priced. Ourwheels are formulated and manufactured by one of the largestmanufacturers of grinding wheels in the world and they aredesigned specifically for our machines. Kwik-Way offers varioustypes of wheels. We have general purpose, finishing, titanium, and hard alloy, so no matter what type of material comes intoyour shop you are going to be able to handle it.To change and redress a wheel on the SVS II Deluxe machine onlytakes about 2 minutes. We find that our general purpose wheel issufficient for most operations, but of course, if you get a highperformance valve or titanium alloy valve, you will need tochange to a different grinding wheel. We also offer a Valve Cabinet designed specifically for the SVSII D machine. The footprint of the cabinet allows for a goodergonomic workstation. With excellent storage below in thecabinet. We find that some people already have areas in theirshop that they have a station designed for and as long as thebench is adequate to support the weight of the machine it willwork fine. The SVS II Deluxe Valve Refacer is sold all over the world.Kwik-Way is by far the largest provider of valve equipment inthe entire world. We have various voltages available and alsovarious chuck capacities. The SVS II Deluxe Valve Refacer comes with a unique warranty wecall the 5-2-1 warranty. The base of the unit is warranted for 5years, all other parts for 2 years and the first year everythingis warranted, parts, labor and electrics. We also have aexclusive 3 year limited warranty on the Chuck. We warrant itagainst loss of accuracy. Most all Funny and Top Fuel Race Teams are using a Kwik-WayValve Machine. If you look at their trailers you will find theyhave Kwik-Way valve grinders on them. The only equipment theytrust for regrinding high performance engine valves is aKwik-Way machine. Cylinder Head Performance Improvement Considerations

Source: articleage.com
It is absolutely un-nerving for me to anticipate about all theconversations I accept with humans that anticipate that simplyinstalling a bigger camshaft, a abate supercharger pulley, ahigh breeze bankrupt or a bigger assimilation will be "THE" acknowledgment tomore performance. The over-used account that the internalcombustion engine is a simple 'air pump' never seems to get thepoint across. The Engine is absolutely a circuitous bulk ofcomponents that MUST plan calm to aftermath the ability to turnthe crankshaft, that turns the manual that turns thewheels that move the car. It is simplistic to anticipate that simplychanging one basic after because the blow will resultin the optimum achievement increase. A branch engine architecture aggregation makes a aloft accomplishment to accomplish allthings plan calm well, while alive aural cost, performance, drivability, believability and emissions designconstraints. They authorize a ambition for achievement and eachcomponent is called to optimize appear that point. If theytarget to accept "X" horsepower, they can afresh acclimatize anniversary andevery basic to that point. Everything from addition pressure, throttle physique anchorage size, bankrupt system, valve sizes, etc. allare accustomed to accommodated the target. Changing any one of the manyoptions may absolutely accretion some achievement but by no agency isoptimized. Going aback to the accepted 'air pump' analogy, let's accede thesingle a lot of accepted 'upgrade' done to the Mini Cooper "S";increasing the addition pressure. There is no catechism that thereis HP to be acquired by artlessly accretion the bulk of air beingforced into the agitation chamber. While the branch by designmust be bourgeois in their best of apparatus and appropriately willalways build-in a allowance for absurdity in favor of reliability, there are absolute engineering banned to what we can apprehend from asingle simple basic change. Accretion addition pressureconsumes application and generates calefaction which accept to be dissipatedby the intercooler. The intercooler on the MINI is bordering atbest, and its accommodation is calmly exceeded, adverse thepotential assets of added addition pressure. The absolute questionregarding achievement enhancements, is how to apperceive if weexceed the point of abbreviating returns, breadth we no longerachieve optimum achievement from an upgrade. The MINI supercharger ability be anticipation of a multiplier. It takeshorsepower to accomplish it amphitheater and in acknowledgment it armament moreair/fuel admixture into the agitation chamber, which in turnresults in added HP. The absorbed is to get added than you give. But accretion the air out of the pump is alone the aboriginal step, you afresh accept to get it into the agitation alcove and to do soyou accept to canyon it anticipation the ports of the butt arch andthen able the valves. As we admission the blower's output, we canquickly admission or beat the arch porting architecture limitestablished by the factory. Getting aback to a added optimumbalance of apparatus will accept abounding benign results. If wemake it easier for the supercharger to bear the desiredamount of air it will plan beneath and back the basics acquaint us thework equals horsepower, we will absorb beneath hp for the betterresults. And if the pump is not alive as harder it aswell candeliver a acknowledgment air admixture which after-effects in a added densemixture, which afresh equals added horsepower. So what can we do to the butt arch to accomplish some of thebalance of components? Air flows into the valves by agency of'ports'. The appearance and admeasurement of these 'ports' ascendancy 'flow' and'velocity'. These are the 2 analytical apparatus of anchorage design. The optimum architecture will crop the able breeze (volume) of airwhile advancement the able breeze (volume). If you anticipate of theport as a harbinger it is simple to accept that as the bore isincreased the breeze will admission but with the aforementioned inputpressure, the acceleration will accept to decrease. The aftereffect of flowand acceleration ability aswell be anticipation of as low RPM verses top RPMperformance. You allegation the acceleration at low engine speeds toproduce the HP but if the aggregate is not there at the top RPM,the engine will not accomplish best application and torque. Thisis why we leave porting to the able with admission to theproper breeze testing equipment. An abecedarian with a die grinderwill tend to accomplish the ports way too big, acutely droppingthe assimilation allegation acceleration and ruining ability (not to mentionruining the head). If architecture a abounding chase motor. it is not aberrant to accord uplow end achievement in favor of absolute HP at top RPMs that canbe maintained on a chase track. Back a lot of of us aswell wish to beable to use our cars on the artery or atomic allegation a added RPMrange- afresh we MUST antithesis Breeze and Velocity. This is the absolute 'art' appropriate to get the optimum performancefrom a 'port job'. As we accept apparently already added thepressure from the blower (15% bargain pulley) we now accept to modifythe butt arch to afresh re-establish that optimum antithesis offlow and velocity. The 'art' about requires not just anunderstanding of how to do it but aswell generally requires a numberof hours of actual accelerated duke operation with top powered diegrinders followed by duke sanding to accomplishment the job. Why isn't this akin of absorption accustomed at the architecture andmanufacturing process? While the branch engineers wellunderstand the allowances of porting butt heads, it is one ofthe engineering/cost compromises that accept to be fabricated in modernproduction engines. The accepted convenance In butt arch porting is to carefullyhand adapt both the assimilation and bankrupt ports to enlarge themslightly while straightening out the airflow aisle and reducingobstructions that aftereffect in any array of pumping loss. As youreduce the turbulence you admission air flow. This is aswell abalance as a altogether bland mirror accomplishment anchorage bank can resultin a abrogating if the ammunition atomization is compromised. Mostcylinder arch tuners will leave the assimilation anchorage 'looking'rougher than the bankrupt for just this reason. It is actual commonfor a acceptable porting ability to analysis both their advance andtheir able artefact on a breeze bench. This accessory is the bestway to quantify the gains, abbreviate of putting the arch on anengine and engine dyno to prove the results. A acceptable porttechnician can authorize a baseline on a breeze bank and afresh beable to do abounding ports and active to the absolutely after-effects that canbe absolute on the breeze analysis bench. The next footfall in the action is to get the air able the valves. There are two levels of achievement that can be considered. Thefirst hurdle is how to get the best breeze from banal valves. Themore important hurdle is how to antithesis added burden fromthe supercharger by accretion the admeasurement of the valves. It hasbeen accurate that 50% of the accretion about begin in cylinderhead affability is able by the simple action of accomplishing a highperformance 'valve job'. The branch afresh accepts compromisefor bulk and manufacturability and appropriately you will acquisition singleangle valve bench in a assembly head. These are about awide breadth 45-degree cut on the bend of the valve andcorresponding bench breadth in the head. These are simple to do and asthe valve size, etc. has been advised for x-horsepower there isno allegation for the branch to absorb added money. Just as we adapted the ports of the butt arch to improveflow, we can do the aforementioned with the bench breadth of the accepted sizevalves. A 'multi-angled valve job', about 3 or 4 angles willresult in smoother alteration for the air and abundantly enhanceflow, while advancement able valve basement breadth for thenecessary amusement of agitation heat. This attention processis advised accepted convenance in achievement affability shops. Multi-angled valve seats are one advance that does notrequire the balloon and absurdity 'art' that is begin in butt headporting. Requesting a 3-angle valve job should be advised theminimum that you would ask from your apparatus shop. Typical3-angle valve jobs cover an bend cut on either ancillary of theactual sealing breadth of the valve seat. The top accuracyrequired of this address agency that the bench breadth is kept to aminimum (often beneath than bisected of the aboriginal bench area). Thenet aftereffect is that the gasses are encouraged, or funneled"through the valve-to-seat opening. The breeze admission isdramatic. The assimilation bench amplitude is about about .040" whilethe bankrupt is kept a little added (.050"0 to acquiesce for betterheat dissipation. It is analytical that the agnate cuts inthe valve seats be akin and appropriately it is important to notswitch valves amid cylinders. 15% caster abridgement increases addition by 10%, from a max pressureof 10lbs to 15lbs. As a absolute displacement pump this meansyou get a college acceleration of air eventually although not muchincrease in breeze or volume. Porting and a acceptable valve job willstill leave you abbreviate of the bare improvements to reachoptimum abeyant provided by the caster admeasurement reduction. Thenext analytic footfall is to admission the admeasurement and lift of thevalves. Again, this accept to be done with the compassionate the needto antithesis breeze and velocity. Remember that we accept said theflow is added important at top RPMs while acceleration is criticalat the lower RPM. Back the blower advancement mostly produces morevelocity, afresh in adjustment to accumulate this antithesis the focus needs tobe on flow. This is best able with added valvesizes. Addition accommodation that we accept to accumulate in apperception is the needto accumulate the actual arrangement amid assimilation and bankrupt flow. Inthe ideal butt arch the bankrupt should breeze at about 70% ofthe intake. This antithesis is maintained both in anchorage architecture andin valve sizes. For the MINI we accept apparent that byincreasing the assimilation valve admeasurement by 2% and the bankrupt by 6% wenot alone can accomplish the ideal antithesis of assimilation verses exhaustbut the added breeze (combined with a top superior porting joband valve job) acquiesce you to get abundant afterpiece to extensive thepotential allowances of abbreviation the caster size. While all this arch plan provides abundant account in and ofitself, a achievement camshaft, with appropriately engineeredduration, overlap and lift, will put the finishing touches onyour re-engineered, top achievement MINI butt head. Withother engines, the accessible amplitude aloft the arch allows formany variations in camshaft design. Discussing these choices andthe consistent achievement and drivability impacts is a subjectfor addition cardboard at addition time. Suffice it to say that forthe MINI, the concrete limitations of the camshaft breadth on topof the arch banned the achievement assets and abeyant appulse todrivability. These limitations cover taller lobes interferingwith the metal atom bung tubes, and claim of maintainingthe banal abject amphitheater bore of the lobes because of theintegral rocker-arm/hydraulic countdown design. The net aftereffect ofthese concrete limitations is that all achievement camshafts forthe MINI (that we apperceive of) all accomplish similarly. Our absorbed with this cardboard is to accommodate you with some guidanceas to compassionate the considerations pertaining to cylinderhead work. We achievement we accept helped you to adjudge whether toundertake such a activity yourself with the abilities of a local"head guru", to barter in your banal arch for ported arch in theinterest of expediency, or to table the accomplished amount and leavethe following of austere ability to added harder amount enthusiasts.Whatever your choice, we say to you "Happy Motoring".Visit www.Minimania.com for added abstruse information.
